Daily Drawing Series: March / by Jackie Sanders

This month has been a whirl wind for the entire world.

Currently in North Carolina we are under a stay at home order and my day job hours have been extremely limited. That being said, I am extremely thankful for my studio practice to fill my day. As a self proclaimed artist-in-residence opportunity (quite literally in my home studio), my art practice has served as a mental getaway. Through creative exploration I fill my day with opportunities, reflection, and purpose rather than the unknowns, uncertainty, and the unanswerable questions that surround us all.

Although my work can not save the world, make a lasting change on our society, or answer all of the unanswerable questions that we have, hopefully it can be a source of inspiration to others.

Positivity. Light. Color. Order. Structure. Reflection. I find that these hold a strong power of importance in our world, now more than ever.

The daily drawing series below has given me the stability and structure I crave while also serving as a documentation of my existence during this world pandemic.

Although I always lean on a foundation of bold colors and geometric forms in my work, it is undeniable that my drawings this month have become even more tight with block-like forms. Potentially these reflect the containment boundaries that we are all confined to or the rigid division between homes, social groups, or personal spaces.

This month I also dove deeper into evolving my drawings with color. Yes this was an inevitable outcome because I had more time to focus on these drawings. But they also served as a zen addition to my daily practice as a regiment to calm my mind and redirecting my focus to elements in my direct control. Color choice, composition, tone, assigned meaning of relationships…I now understand why adult coloring books are so popular!
