Community Engagement: Art Made WITH Your Community

Public art can do more than transform a physical space. It can create opportunities to listen, connect, reflect, and better understand the people who experience that space every day.

My community-engaged practice invites people into the creative process through conversation, storytelling, hands-on participation, and playful opportunities for feedback. Depending on the project, that might mean gathering perspectives before a design begins, creating artwork together, experimenting with temporary activations, or finding creative ways to make community voices visible.

Art shouldn't simply be made for a community. Whenever possible, it should be made with them.

Every Project Starts With A Different Question

  • What makes this place feel like home?

  • What stories deserve to be shared?

  • What do people value about their community?

  • What feels missing?

  • What could this space become?

Rather than approaching community engagement with a predetermined outcome, I collaborate with project partners to identify the questions worth asking and create approachable, creative ways for people to participate.

What we hear can then inform the artwork, activation, public space, or larger project that follows.

Ways We Can Work Together

Community engagement doesn't have to look the same for every project. Engagement strategies can be scaled and combined based on the community, project goals, timeline, and desired outcomes.

COMMUNITY LISTENING + STORYTELLING

Sometimes the most important first step is simply listening.

Creative conversations, prompts, and interactive experiences invite people to share their stories, perspectives, and ideas in ways that feel accessible and approachable.

What we hear can uncover what matters most about a place and help shape the creative possibilities that follow.

PARTICIPATORY ART MAKING

Invite your community to leave a physical mark on the spaces they share.

Community painting days, collaborative installations, and other hands-on experiences transform the creation of public art into an opportunity for connection and collective ownership.

Projects can be structured so participants of different ages and artistic experience levels can confidently contribute to a professionally designed final artwork.

CREATIVE PLACEMAKING & PROTOTYPING

Sometimes the best way to imagine what a space could become is to experience it differently.

Temporary artwork, color, interactive elements, seating, games, signage, and other creative interventions can transform familiar or underused spaces and invite people to interact with them in new ways.

These temporary activations can also become opportunities to observe how people use a space, gather feedback, and test ideas before longer-term decisions are made.

YOUTH & INTERGENERATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

Young people bring perspectives to public spaces that adults can easily overlook.

Creative workshops, collaborative art making, and accessible feedback activities can give children and teens meaningful ways to contribute their ideas while creating opportunities for multiple generations to make something together.

Engagement strategies can be adapted for schools, camps, youth organizations, family events, and broader community projects.

PUBLIC ART & ENGAGEMENT CONSULTING

Not every project begins with an artwork already defined.

I collaborate with municipalities, planners, design teams, developers, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to explore how public art and creative engagement can strengthen a larger project or initiative.

Together, we can identify opportunities for participation and translate community perspectives into creative possibilities.

From Listening to Creative Action

Community engagement isn't just one moment in a project. It can become part of the entire creative process.

✔️ We begin by identifying what we want to learn and who should be part of the conversation.

✔️ We create approachable ways for people to share their perspectives.

✔️ We look for themes, stories, and possibilities within what we hear.

Then we explore how those insights can inform an artwork, activation, experience, or next step. The final outcome may be a mural, an interactive installation, a temporary activation, a collaborative event or simply a clearer understanding of what a community wants to see happen next.
