City of Raleigh - Downtown Signal Box / by Jackie Sanders

City of Raleigh Signal Box

Public Art Installation, Summer 2025 | Halifax and Peace Street Intersection in Raleigh NC 27607

This design was selected as part of the City of Raleigh, Public Art on Signal Boxes Project. Digitially printed and adhered to the metal panels of this outdoor signal box, this project was installed in downtown Raleigh during the Summer of 2025 with a handful of other fetured artists.

Transforming Once Overlooked Spaces (and Objects!)

Signal boxes are located at intersections and control traffic lights. The boxes are integral to the flow of cars and pedestrians throughout the city, but their plain metal exteriors often leave them hidden in plain sight…until now!

The program’s goal is to transform overlooked infrastructure into vibrant community landmarks. These wrapped boxes are custom designed to spark curiosity and offer a moment of reflection in the middle of daily life.

Community, Connection, & The Future You Are Creating

For me, this project is an opportunity to highlight the way we move through Raleigh—both physically and emotionally. By layering maps, homes, greenery, and abstract patterns, my design turns a functional object into a visual reminder of the connections we share.

My design pulls from several key motifs, each chosen to represent the systems and experiences that shape life in Raleigh:

  • Downtown Street Map 🗺️ – representing the physical connections that link us together.

  • Greenery and Plants 🌱 – grounding us in nature, even in urban environments, and symbolizing “home.”

  • Circuit-style Patterns 🔌 – nodding to the invisible systems (social, digital, and emotional) that influence our daily lives.

  • Geometric Color Blocks 🎨 – exploring the divides in our public spaces, both intentional and unintentional, and how art can help bridge them.

These layers come together to create a colorful collage of connection and reflection—an artwork that’s both playful and thoughtful, grounded in place yet universal in theme.
